CHAPTER VIII – No Turning Back

After the short skirmish, Quartz realized that marching 15 hours straight, through devastating snow storm weather, with only a 10 minute break, perhaps wasn’t enough.

They decided to camp and rest for a few hours…

…eat, interact.

Even though the weather was treacherous, it wasn’t likely to get any better, so they did as best they could to rest.

Bre’atoa and Symayah tended to Krent’s wounds, though she did not seem pleased…

…Chalace told her she had no choice.

Ornhawk, A’ro and Min patrolled the camp, while Taro, Quartz and Chalace sat around the campfire.

“So tell me Chalace, what exactly is the difference between a Warlock and a Mage?” asked the Monk Taro, trying to open up conversation.

Chalace laughed, “Well, lets just say, there’s certain ‘pacts’ involved in my trade,”.

With this Quartz shook his head, “Oh dear,” he spoke under his breath.

“What about you ‘Monk of Pey’?” asked Chalace with a grin, “What winds your clock…”.

Taro nodded, and smiled a bit, figuring he deserved this sort of question.

“Well, my Father, and his Father before him were Monks of Pey… But my Great Grandfather, well, he was a Thief,” explained Taro.

“A Thief? Really…” replied Quartz as he toar a piece of meet off a stick which had been roasting over the fire.

“Go on…” spoke Chalace.

“He actually ended up falling to his death while trying to escape the Emperors Guard, and so his family was left to pay his debt,” Taro explained.

“Hmm…” Chalace seemed a bit erked by this notion.

“So his son, my Grandfather, went into service at the Temple of Pey in order to pay his Father’s debt… And my Father and I simply continued that tradition,” Taro concluded.

“Not a lot of heart  in that decision,” spoke Chalace abruptly, with this Quartz lightly smacked his fist against Chalace;s shoulder.

Chalace smiled at Quartz.

“Well…” Taro started to reply when the Ranger A’ro approached.

“Guard change… Taro, you replace Min, Quartz you replace Ornhawk, I’m not sleeping tonight,” and with this A’ro stepped back out of the fire’s light.

“Another time,” Taro spoke to Chalace, then stepped out of the fire’s light as well.

“Take it easy on him Chalace,” spoke Quartz who grabbed his axe, and also disappeared from the fire’s light.

Entering the fire light was the Drow Ranger Ornhawk, and Min the Rogue…

Min pulled down her hood, as did Ornhawk, both giving Chalace a nod.

The night went without incident, and the Party was off once more towards the three mountains which surrounded the Trigon, and Frost Rhealm within.

CHAPTER VII – First Conflict

Krent tore through the icy ground, her dark vision giving her more visibility, but still largely blinded by the wind and snow spraying against her face.

Meanwhile Ornhawk followed her, much more quietly, his Drow longbow drawn.

Suddenly Ornhawk stopped, and realeased his arrow, wizzing Krent’s shoulder she barely flinches, and striking one of the two White Orc Hunters in the dark.

ARGGK!

This caused the White Orc to release his drawn arrow way off target, but the second White Orc remained focused, and shot Krent directly in the chest.

Ornhawk then released a second arrow at the wounded White Orc, striking it again, this time in its’ chest…

…it fell to its’ knee.

The second White Orc’s bow string then snapped before it could take another shot at the Half Orc running towards it…

…Krent leaped through the air with an Orc battle cry, and came down with her two scimitars upon the second White Orc.

AHHHHRRR! the White Orc screamed as the first scimitar struck it, then the second slit just below its’s neck, leaving it badly wounded, with Krent’s foot upon its’ chest.

Ornhawk suddenly appeared out of the blinding snow, another arrow drawn, it took a close range shot at the first wounded White Orc, leaving it barely breathing.

The second orc, pinned down by Krent, reached for its’ spear, and stuck it in the Fighters stomach!

This only seemed to anger Krent more, as she stuck one of her scimitars into its’ throat, killing it.

Ornhawk finished the first White Orc, and the battle was over.

Suddenly the rest of the Party appeared.

“ARE YOU MAD ORC!” spoke Quartz loudly…

…with this Krent turned, the spear still in her stomach, and scimitars bloodied, staring with anger at the Paladin Quartz.

“THE NAME IS KRENT! NOT ORC…” she yelled at him.

Suddenly the Warlock Chalace appeared, his hands glowing the familiar purple, “Enough you two,” he spoke as he sent out two purple warning flashes at the White Orc’s Dire Wolves which were watching some twenty feet forward, out of site of the Party.

With the flash, the two wolves howled and disappeared into the storm.

Suddenly Symayah was at Krent’s side, she quickly pulled the spear out of her, and her hands glowed orange, “Heal,” she spoke, and the Half Orc’s stomach wound disappeared.

Krent gave Symayah a dirty look, then stepped into the storm.

“I’ll follow her,” interjected the Rogue Min, but before she could Chalace put a hand on her shoulder…

…”Let her be,” he spoke.

CHAPTER VI – The Frozen Wastelands Of Scre’er

SCRE’ER

Taro stands before a stretch of ice wasteland which stretches out beyond site, meeting the fog like cloud sitting upon the ground beyond.

Behind him the rest of the Party prepare themselves for the crossing of it, the two Rangers A’ro and Ornhawk making sure that all of their gear is as ready as it can be.

Quartz approaches.

“Not to inviting, is it…” Quartz states more than asks.

“I find it hard to believe anything is alive out there…” Taro replies, his Monk like demeanor holding true.

“Oh there’s things living out there… Trust me,” Quartz finishes, than returns to the Party.

“ALRIGHT, LISTEN UP!” hollered A’ro to the Party, so that all could hear…

“ACROSS THE ICE THERE WILL BE HUMAN ARCTIC SCOUTS KEEPING AN EYE OUT FOR TRAVELERS… BEYOND THAT, THE WHITE ORC HUNTERS… AND WITHIN THE THREE MOUNTAINS FORMING THE TRIGON, ARE THE KNIGHTS OF DARK FROST, AND THEIR HIGH TOWER…” he continued.

Many of the Party Members didn’t exactly look thrilled at their outlook.

“ALL OF THEM SERVING PRINCE TAROV OF FROST RHEALM! THE TRUTH IS WE’RE NOT LIKELY TO EVEN REACH THE ICE FORTRESS OF FROST RHEALM…” with this A’ro looks at the smiling Paladin Quartz…

“BUT THIS FOOL SEEMS TO THINK IT’S POSSIBLE,” A’ro finished with a wink towards Quartz.

Quartz then began to speak loudly, “NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, LISTEN TO A’RO AND ORNHAWK… THESE RANGERS ARE OUR ONLY HOPE OF GETTING THERE, AND GETTING BACK HERE!”.

“ANYTHING ORNHAWK?” Quartz asked Ornhawk who nodded no.

“ALRIGHT THEN, LETS MOVE OUT!” Quartz finished.

The Party would march in single file across the ice, ropes tying one member to the next…

In front, the Ranger A’ro lead…

…behind him was Quartz, followed by the Half Orc Krent…

…and behind her the Wood Elf Druid Bre’atoa.

The Second Ranger Ornhawk was in back, with Min the Rogue in front of him, and the Cleric Symayah before her.

Taro was in front of the Cleric, with the Warlock Chalace before him.

The winds and icy snow picked up, stinging the Party’s skin, and making the vision even worse.

What felt like three days of crossing, was actually just 14 hours…

…at which point they took a 10 minute rest.

Ornhawk approached A’ro, “Anything?” he asked.

A’ro glanced over at the Drow Ranger, “No…”.

Ornhawk nodded, then returned to the back of the line.

A’ro then looked back at Min who seemed to be anticipating it, and so she removed the rope from her waste, and made her way to him.

‘How far ahead do you want me?” she asked.

“Not yet… But I do want you at my side,” he replied, then tugged on the rope, as did the others in response, starting the Party forward again.

They travel for several hours more, when Min suddenly places her hand on A’ro’s shoulder, “Wait…”, and brings the Party to a halt.

Their visibility being almost nonexistent, A’ro puts his senses on alert.

Ornhawk, though he’s all the way back, quickly makes his way to the front.

“They know we’re here…” Min says to A’ro and Ornhawk.

“But they’re not moving,” interjects A’ro.

Ornhawks keen Elven and Ranger senses go into overdrive, and he closes is eyes,”Hunters… Two of them,” he suddenly says.

“Most likely White Orc,” suddenly interjects Quartz who has moved in closer to the three of them.

“What do we do?” Quartz asks.

“For now… Wait,” replies A’ro calmly.

AN HOUR LATER

“Still no movement,” speaks Ornhawk.

“I’m not waiting any longer!” suddenly speaks Krent abrasively as she moves past Quartz, Min and the Rangers, and disappears into the belting snow fall.

A’ro looks over at Ornhawk, “I’ll stay with the Party…”.

Ornhawk nods, draws an arrow, and moves forward disappearing as well.

“Taro’s gone!” speaks Symayah.

“Wonderful!” replies Chalance.
